The most horrible countries in the world
Favell Lee Mortimer (1802-1878) never left England and yet wrote a travel guide. Her book was titled ‘The most horrible countries in the world’ (1850) and she definitely did not want to spark interest in foreign countries. Her knowledge derived exclusively from books and as the pessimist she was, she was convinced that it is best to stay at home.
