Guenther Domenig

DomenigIDomenigII

The so-called Domenig House was designed by the architect Günther Domenig, a key protagonist of Deconstructivism in Austria. It was built from 1975 to 1979 as a local branch of the ‘Zentralsparkasse und Kommerzialbank Wien’ (banking institution).

Today it houses the Echo Media House and a gallery. The reinforced concrete building caused a heated debate when it was opened, because of its convex, crushed looking façade. Inside the building many curved elements can be found, that often had been improvised during construction.

Art Deco: 1910-1939

ART DECO: 1910-1939
Charlotte Benton, Tim Benton, Ghislaine Wood

ArtDecoBook

This publication has the potential to become the standard book on Art Deco, as everyhting is explained very well and illustrated beautifully. The authors point out that unlike former design movements, Art Deco was eclectic and had many sources of inspiration. And to some extent even revolutionary, as its industrial production made design avilable for the masses.

The books consists of forty essays that are divided into these sections: Sources and Iconography, 1925 Paris Exhibition, Spread of Deco and Deco World. The authors explain how various art styles contributed to Art Deco and how it  spread around the world, mainly as architecture and fashion, but also as fine art style and commercial products. The book’s layout and photos are fabulous and you can benefit from a comprehensive bibliography at the end.

Charlotte Benton is a design and architecture historian, Tim Benton is Professor of Art History at the Open University and Ghislaine Wood works as a curator.

A privileged life

A PRIVILEGED LIFE. CELEBRATING WASP STYLE

Wasp

This book could have been very interesting. Unfortunately it is not. Definitively a plus are the sometimes really fabulous photos showing the WASPy ubringing of the author. They are accompanied by photos of the most prominent protagonists of WASP style. The biggest minus are the missing contexts and an informed analysis. Therefore the book is just another booklet promoting a privileged lifestyle, but not asking for the representation at work and the sometimes well-hidden social dimensions and relations.
