Laziness

A very good read on the history of laziness.

Not having to work was considered the perfect condition in the ancient world and in the Middle Ages at least not negative per se. But modern times brought about the belief in progress and the desire for change and therefore, laziness got condemned.

Today we are all super busy, not only when at work, but also in our leisure time. And we even have to explain ourselves, if we want to do just nothing in our leisure time. Just recently the idea of slowing down has begun to gain acceptance again, as more and more struggle with overwork and stress.

Through films like Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Kill Bill’ traditional Japanese art reached a wider audience. And of course, the film’s theme has a lot to do with the fragility of existence, which is quite important to Japanese culture.

The exhibition in the ‘Leopold Museum’ presents around 50 masterful and previously unseen examples of traditional Japanese ink painting (Sumi-e) and calligraphy (Shodō) from the ‘Genzō Hattori Collection’. It covers works from the 12th to the 20th century. The exhibition is complemented by Japanese colour woodcuts from the ‘Leopold Collection II’.

This book presents basic texts in Fashion Studies. It gathers excerpts from such prominent contributors to fashion theory as Thorstein Veblen, Georg Simmel, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Pierre Bourdieu, Angela McRobbie, Dick Hebdige, Elena Esposito and more.

Each of the four chapters ‘Class’, ‘Distinction’, ‘Utopia’ and ‘Deviation’ opens with a short theoretical introduction by the editor. The book presents different approaches to fashion: clothing as a commodity, the concept of ‘class fashion’ and the ‘No Sweat’ campaign, the importance of fashion and style to subculture, second-hand clothing, the concept of ‘anti-fashion’, ethical fashion brands, the relationship between high fashion and culture, unisex fashion and much more.
