Oh so noble I …

The photo above shows the side street entrance to one of my favourite department stores in Vienna. It is the former E. Braun & Co store, that was founded in 1892/1893 as one of Vienna’s most noble fashion stores.

In the beginning mostly aristocratic brides shopped here for their big day and their later life as a married woman. And of course it soon became an exclusive supplier to the court of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1911) .

Unfortunately the original store does not exist any more, but the fine building with the delicate interieur is still there. And also the later founded E. Braun & Co store on New York’s Park Avenue.

Some more enlightenment

ZeroNot
Joseph Kosuth, from the Zero & Not series, 1985

The quote used by Joseph Kosuth is a quote from Sigmund Freud’s book about the Unconscious (1920). It means: “the repetition compulsion that was meant to make treatment successful, is drawn quasily by the I, that wants to stick to the pleasure principle, to its side.”

Joseph Kosuth (born 1945 Toldedo/Ohio) is an important protagonist of the so-called ‘Concept Art’ and studied in the series ‘Zero & Not’ the relationship of art to philosophy.

More naked men

Naked men seem to have become a trend in Vienna’s cultural activites quite recently …

Admittedley the new exhebition of Erwin Wurm ‘DE PROFUNDIS’ is not about nudity, but about the ageing body. Erwin Wurm presents 18 drawn self portraits and 71 redrawn/-painted photographs of (partly) nude fellow artists

Amour

Today I want to present you the new and very moving film of Michael Haneke ‘Amour. The film’s title keeps its promise and delivers so much more about social relations and challenges.

“Michael Haneke’s new film, a study of the effects of ageing and dementia on a blissful married couple, is intelligent film-making of the highest order.” (Peter Bradshaw, Guardian)
