The ‘Underwood Typewriter Company’ was founded in 1895 and headquartered in New York City (New York). Underwood produced the first truly modern typewriter.

In 1963 Olivetti took over the company and in the 1980s the Underwood name last appeared on Olivetti portable typewriters.

Underwood is a constant in pop culture, as films like ‘Moulin Rouge’, ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?’, ‘Catch Me If You Can’ refer to Underwood typewriters and authors like William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jack Kerouac wrote their famous works on them.
